Boulder and Shadow, Alabama Hills, California

(order ID # CT35-00872-A)

Early and late light are usually excellent light for nature photography. Not only is the color warmer than it is at midday, but the shadows are cast sideways instead of down. I like both effects, so I make sure to get up before dawn when I'm on a shooting expedition. Once the sun is up I have to act quickly, as the shadows can move surprisingly quickly. I spent a long time shooting this voluptuous boulder as the light changed: close-ups, distant views, color, black and white. I like the bold colors and graphic simplicity of this particular version of that morning's varied experience.
