Brewing Storm

(order ID # BW35-00005-35)

I had camped at Young Lakes in Yosemite National Park. The hike to the lakes is out of Tuolumne Meadows and leaves you above treeline at just over 10,000'. I found this scene on a cross-country dayhike over to Roosevelt Lake, an attractive lake in a cirque formed by majestic Sierra peaks. After photographing the lake I broke for lunch, fighting both the urge to flee the oncoming storm and the queasiness from mild altitude sickness. Despite my altitude-induced apathy I noticed these three sentinels lining the ridgeline and set up the photograph. I only had to move slightly to get just the right spacing for the rocks, and I put a yellow filter on my lens to accentuate the brooding sky. Yellow filters work in black and white photography by blocking blue light. Since the dark clouds were a livid gray-blue, the yellow filter darkened them to enhance the drama.
