Boulder, Zion National Park

(order ID # CT45-00003)

Zion Canyon has shed-sized boulders like this strewn here and there. I found this one absolutely compelling, and I'm not entirely sure why. The jarring note of something so large and hard amidst the gentle grasses has something to do with it, as does the appealing graphic form. The textures and colors on the surface of the rock makes another interesting contrast with the surrounding soft vegetation. Although the method of the rock's arrival should make me question my safety in this area, instead I find the rock's solidity reassuring. I can climb on it, I can hide behind it, I can lean against it while resting. Where others find it cold and forbidding, I find it friendly and inviting.
