I was encamped in southern Utah's red rock country. I chanced to awake at 3:00 a.m. only to see my favorite constellation, Orion, barely rising above the nearby bluffs. I set my camera on a tripod and took some long exposures, around 5 to 10 minutes each. The exposures were selected partly by experience, a lot by luck, and mostly by the limits of my patience. But I got lucky. The exposures are great. Even luckier is that fact that there was a moon up which illuminated the foreground cliffs; otherwise they'd be a black silhouette. Luckier still is that there was no breeze: you can almost count the leaves on the trees despite the long exposure. Because this image demonstrates the intrinsic colors of stars, among other things, it was selected to be on the cover of an astrophysics textbook. |
