| Southern Utah is in the stunning red rock country of the Colorado Plateau. Scattered around the Plateau are slot canyons, bizarre water-carved chasms in otherwise table-flat land. Walking the land you might not know you were close to a slot until falling into one, but find the slot's entrance and you can walk into an eerie environment of sinuous curves and twisting passages. A tip led me to this slot canyon along the Hole-in-the-Rock Road southeast of Escalante. Some slots you can walk along a sandy bottom, but this particular one corkscrewed around so that traversing it took as much climbing and shinnying and crawling as walking. |
