|I was coming out of the mountains after a backpacking trip near Mt. Whitney in California's southern Sierra Nevada. Although I was tired, I kept my head on a swivel as I drove (don't worry, the road was deserted) because it was dusk and amazing things can happen at and after sunset in any direction. When I saw this natural light formation growing I pulled over to the side of Whitney Portal Road and enjoyed it as I made photographs. That's Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the United States outside of Alaska, on the left. The sun is below the horizon, and there must have been a once-in-a-lifetime configuration of clouds funneling the light upwards.
